Five Types of Sex Toy I Really Want to Try in 2023

When I tell people that I review sex toys for a living, they tend to assume that I’ve tried every type of toy known to humanity. And it’s true that I have tried a lot of different toys, from vibrators and clitoral suction toys to strokers, butt plugs, and all manner of kink paraphernalia. But even now, there’s also a lot of things I haven’t tried, either because I haven’t had the opportunity or because I just wasn’t aware until recently that they existed.

Inspired by my new friends at Veronica Play Date, here are five types of sex toys I’m hoping to try in 2023!

Waterslyde Aquatic Stimulator

Waterslyde clitoral stimulator

I first became intrigued by this one when I read a review of it by the incomparable Kate Sloan. Essentially, you attach it to the taps on your bathtub and it directs the water towards your clit or any other body part you care to position under it.

I’m not sure entirely how practical this one will be for me, for two reasons: first, my bathtub has its taps in the middle rather than at the end, which seems like it could be logistically challenging. Second, my bath has two separate taps for hot and cold, and I feel like that might make it hard to get a consistent pleasant temperature from the water.

But practical issues aside, God I want to try this! Maybe I’ll get one next time I’m staying in a hotel with a tub or something.

Ride-On Sex Machine

Cowgirl sex machine

The answer to why I’ve never tried one of these is simple: they’re expensive as hell. For most of us, spending $2000-$4000 on a sex toy isn’t even remotely accessible, let alone one that we may or may not like. So I live in hope that I’ll get invited to a play party where there’s one of these so that I have the opportunity to try one at least once.

B-Vibe’s Cowgirl is perhaps the most famous example currently on the market, and I’m absolutely obsessed with this unicorn variation!

Combined Suction and Tongue Toy

Fantasy For Her Ultimate Pleasure Pro from Pipedream

I’ve been curious about these ever since I wrote marketing copy about one of them for a client. The Fantasy For Her Ultimate Pleasure Pro (I hate the name, but you can’t have everything) is the version I see the most often, though there are other iterations on a similar theme.

Essentially, these toys combine suction of the kind you’d get from a pussy pump with a flicking tongue action designed to mimic cunnilingus. I’m endlessly curious about toys that claim to feel like receiving oral sex, because thus far not a single one that claims this has managed it, but I live in hope! This version also includes an insertable arm for G-spot stimulation.

Tapping Vibrator

There’s only so many variations on “it vibrates and that feels good” in the world. Vibrators are wonderful inventions, but they’re not always the type of stimulation you’re in the mood for. That’s why, when I find toys that stimulate in different ways (such as thrusting, oscillating, or spinning) I get very very excited about them.

The Swap Love to Love includes three separate motors and offers two different sensations: vibrating and tapping. Let’s just say I am VERY curious about the latter and how it might feel.

Triple Stimulation Toy

Satisfyer Top Secret Plus triple stimulation vibrator

I’ve tried a lot of dual stimulation toys (those that stimulate both the clit and G-spot at the same time) at this stage. Some of them have been excellent, and many of them have been disappointing. But I’ve never yet tried a triple stim – clitoral, vaginal, and anal – toy.

The Satisfyer Top Secret Plus is one such example. This wearable toy includes two insertable arms and an external clitoral stimulator.

So there you have it, five types of sex toys I’d like to try in 2023. What’s on your masturbatory wishlist for next year?

[Toy Review] Lovense Ferri

I’ve had mixed experiences with Lovense. I finally got my hands on the Lush, which half the sex-positive internet seems to be obsessed with, and I didn’t get what the fuss was about. Then I tried the Domi and fell in love. So what of the Lovense Ferri, which arrived in my #MasturbationMay shipment from Lovehoney?

Lovense Ferri: Small But Mighty

The first thing that struck me about the Lovense Ferri is just how small it is. It is a miniature knicker vibrator (design to be worn inside your underwear) measuring just 3 inches in length.

The Ferri comes equipped with a magnetic clip which holds it in place and means you can use it with pretty much any pair of knickers you choose. Its curved shape sits comfortably against your body, and the underside is gently ridged for enhanced clitoral stimulation.

Pro tip: I discovered that the Ferri is also great for sitting on. Like, say, while writing erotica in your desk chair?

The Ferri is waterproof, USB rechargeable, and offers 180 minutes of run time for a two hour charge. It is Bluetooth compatible and can be app controlled, which we’ll get more into in a minute.

Best of all, the Ferri is powerful as hell. The first time I tried it, it got me off in less than five minutes. There’s a lot of motor packed into a small space and I am very, very here for it.

Can You Actually Use It in Public?

I’m gonna go with… maybe.

The Lovense Ferri is reasonably quiet for its level of power, but I certainly wouldn’t describe it as silent (or “whisper quiet,” ughhhh.) You could probably get away wih it in a loud or crowded area, but I wouldn’t risk it in a quieter space.

To App or Not to App?

You really do need the app to get the full functionality from the Lovense Ferri. The toy itself features a single-button interface, three pre-programmed speeds, and four patterns. Which is fine, but pretty limited for such an expensive toy. You also can’t really use it for its intended “wearable” purpose without the app, as it doesn’t come with a remote control.

Lovense’s app is genuinely excellent. It’s honestly at least twice as good as any other sex toy app I’ve tested. However, it’s a bit of a privacy issue because it insists on having access to various parts of your phone, so do with that information what you will.

The Lovense Remote app is free to download and compatible with iOS (9.0 and later,) and Android (4.3 and later). You can also get Mac and PC versions, if you prefer.

Download the app, set up a free account, switch on your toy, and ensure your Bluetooth is connected. Then click the link symbol in the top right corner. My Lovense Ferri connected in a second and maintained a steady connection throughout use.

App Functions

Here are just a few of the fun things you can do with the Lovense Ferri and the Lovense Connect app:

  • Use the “Remote” control panel to change the vibration speed or use the “loop” button to create a repeating pattern.
  • Find pre-installed vibration patterns and your previously saved settings in “My Patterns.”
  • Schedule the toy to start vibrating at a specific time with the “Alarm” function. Fun if you want to wear it to sleep and then get vibed awake, maybe?
  • Make your toy respond to nearby sounds such as music and voices with the “Sound” setting. You could even watch porn and sync the toy with the sounds, if you want!
  • Vibe along to music stored on your device (or linked through a service like Spotify) with the “Music” function.

You can also connect any Lovense toy with cam sites like Chaturbate, MyFreeCams, and Manyvids. If you’re an online sex worker, this can be a fun way to interact with your fans. You can even programme your toy to respond to tips!

I haven’t tried this myself as I’m not a cam model, but reviews are generally very favourable!

Long Distance

Whether you’re in a long distance relationship or currently separated by the pandemic, you can use the “Long Distance” app function to give your partner control of your vibe.

There are two ways to do this. Your partner can download the app, create an account, and give you their username to connect. Alternatively, you can create a “control link” which can last from a few seconds up to an hour, and is single-use only.

Again, connectivity is strong and reliable and the toy is super responsive. Just make sure your internet connection is stable!

Verdict

Yes and yes and yes again! I can’t believe that something so small could be so brilliant, but this is an absolute winner.

The Lovense Ferri retails for £129.99 ($139.99 US) and, as long as you’re happy using a smartphone app, it’s worth every penny.

[Toy Review] The Ruby Glow

UPDATE 23.12.2019: The original Ruby Glow has been discontinued. A review of the new Ruby Glow Dusk will follow in due course.

I wasn’t going to do sex toy reviews when I stared doing this blog. But… I guess I’m doing toy reviews now! Let’s dive in, shall we?

To begin with, there are two things you need to know about me. The first is that I know what I like and, when it comes to sex toys, what I like is lots and lots of hard vibrations right on that spot on my clit. For this reason, I haven’t bought a new vibrator since my amazing partner gifted me a Doxy nearly two years ago. The second is that I am endlessly curious and a bit of a geek. Sp of something is a bit quirky, a bit different, or a bit “ooh, I’ve never seen one of those before,” I have to try it, especially if it relates to sex.

Is there any wonder, then, that when I encountered the new Ruby Glow (designed by Tabitha Rayne and made by the good folks at Rocks Off) at Eroticon 2017 I simply had to get one?

The Ruby is, essentially, a ride-on external vibrator. It’s hands-free, non-penetrative and can be used through clothing or directly on the body. It has ten different settings and dual motors to control the vibrating vaginal/perineal mound and the clitoral stimulator, which can be used together or separately.

The Ruby Glow sex toy, a pink saddle-style vibrator, labelled with the words "clitoris," "pubic bone" and "vagina/perineum" and marked as being 17cm long.

I first tried the Ruby Glow sitting on the edge of my (epic, super-king) bed at the end of a good fuck with my primary partner, Mr CK. There were some pleasant vibrations coming from the toy but nothing that was going to have be screaming in orgasmic bliss any time soon. The problem, we quickly identified, was that the surface of the bed wasn’t rigid enough for me to be able to grind against the toy in a satisfying way.

“What if you tried it on my desk chair?” Mr CK asked. And that’s exactly what I did. Laptop in front of me with some of my favourite erotica open, I put the toy between my legs and set it going. I tried a few settings. My favourite, by far, is the highest of the 3 constant vibration settings on both motors – but, as with anything else in sex, your mileage may very well vary.

I readjusted the toy a few times to get it on my clit in just the right spot, but once it was in place I could grind against it and fuck it easily, without needing to use my hands – keeping them free to browse through the delicious porn on my screen..

The Ruby Glow ride-on vibrator

I’m not, typically, a girl who comes quickly from clitoral stimulation, but I do have my biggest and most satisfying orgasms this way if I persevere. It took me about 25 minutes to get off with the Ruby Glow, and it was a deliciously slow and drawn out orgasm with a long build-up. Yum!

This toy is perfect for me particularly because I like to read erotica (typically on a screen but occasionally in a physical book) while I masturbate. Anyone who has done this will understand the fine art that is balancing a book/laptop/other device in one hand, while keeping the other free for finger action or holding a toy. The Ruby Glow beautifully solves this problem. It’s also ideal for anyone who writes erotica and finds themselves getting turned on while working, anyone who engages in cyber sex and wants to wank and type at the same time, and anyone with joint or mobility issues that make using a hand-held toy difficult. In short, if you’re a person with a vulva who enjoys vibrations, I recommend you give this toy a try.

My Ratings (all scores out of 5★)

Price: ★★★★★
At £39.99 it’s comparable in price to many of the far less luxurious – not to mention less safe – toys on the market, and more affordable than many of their higher end counterparts.

Materials: ★★★★★
It’s made of absolutely gorgeous, silky soft, body-safe silicon.

Appearance: ★★★★
It’s reasonably pretty and it looks like a little saddle, which makes me giggle. And for someone new to sex toys, it looks a lot less threatening and scary than a giant wand or “rabbit” style vibe. It even gets a pass on being pink (a bit of a bugbear for me) because it matches the name and it’s not an obnoxious, ouch-my-eyes neon.

Ease of Use: ★★★
It takes some experimenting to get the angle and setting that works for your body, and you may have to try it on one or two different surfaces or chairs to find out what works for you. Worth persevering for, though? Definitely!

Ease of care & cleaning: ★★★
The Ruby is not waterproof, which makes it a little more difficult to clean. The best way is to use a body-safe sterile wipe available from medical suppliers.

Versatility: ★★★★
With two individually-controllable motors and ten different speed and pulse settings, an easily customisable wank is yours with the Ruby.

Intensity: ★★★
Full disclosure here: I like my vibrations intense. I’ve found myself even wanting to turn my beloved Doxy, “the world’s most powerful massage vibrator,” up one notch higher than it goes. For this reason I can only give the Ruby Glow three stars on this score, as the power isn’t quite where I would have liked it to be. I completely acknowledge that not everyone wants power power power, and at the end of the day the Ruby Glow still gave me a glorious orgasm!

Overall Score: ★★★★
Cute, safe, innovative and effective! Could have done with a bit more power, and not the quietest, but it’s genuinely innovative and enjoyable to use. A great addition to your collection.
